Knorr-Bremse outlines clutch compressor advantages
Braking systems specialist Knorr-Bremse has highlighted the features and benefits of its clutch compressor technology, which is installed on all types of commercial vehicles and produces the compressed air for braking and suspension systems.
The company provides single (360 cc) and twin (720 cc) cylinder compressors, with operating pressure of up to 12.5 bar, a water cooled cylinder jacket and a pneumatically operated clutch.
Advantages are said to include high efficiency, high volume of energy saving, low oil carryover and reduced fuel consumption compared with standard compressors, low delivery air temperature, and increased compressor lifespan.
“Knorr-Bremse was the first manufacturer to launch the clutch compressor to the European market. Since then, many OEs are using Knorr-Bremse clutch compressors,” said the company.
“Unlike compressors using conventional technology, clutch compressors avoid idle running phases. Instead, there are standby periods during which the engine output is physically separated from the compressor, thereby saving energy and reducing compressor wear.”
This is achieved by means of intelligent control of the clutch, Knorr-Bremse says, whereby drive to the compressor is disengaged during the part of the duty cycle when there is no air demand.
The technology is said to reduce a truck’s CO2 emissions by up to 2.5 tons per year, and average diesel fuel consumption by up to 1,000 litres per year for a long haul vehicle.
Compressors are available for MAN, Scania, Volvo, Renault and Iveco.
Knorr-Bremse also offers a clutch compressor tool case, containing all the special tools for its clutch compressor portfolio combined in a single package, which it says helps make repairs faster, safer and more cost-efficient.
The tools are said to simplify daily workshop tasks and enable the maintenance of all the company’s clutch compressor applications. The case was developed in cooperation with specialist tool producer Gedore Automotive, which has a presence in more than 70 countries.
The tools assist in dismounting and mounting the clutch, replacing the actuation piston and mounting the output shaft.
“When maintaining, repairing or replacing complex systems it is essential to use special repair tools to make sure to gain the original condition without any flaws,” said Knorr-Bremse.
“Without the use of professional equipment, crucial parts like gaskets or guides can be damaged or a substantial amount of extra time will be needed by the workshop.
“The new clutch compressor tool case fits perfectly to the service strategy of the Knorr-Bremse clutch compressors.”
