MAN offers camera mirror option

Traton subsidiary MAN is joining Mercedes and DAF in offering a camera rear-view system as an option in place of front and kerb mirrors with cameras.

In addition to the legally prescribed fields of vision, the integrated MAN OptiView system provides customised views for driving situations such as turning off, manoeuvring or driving on the motorway. Previous blind spots on both sides are now visible, protecting cyclists and pedestrians in particular.

External camera pods reduce air-resistance compared to conventional mirrors and eliminate mirror-cast blind spots.

The cameras depict the traffic situation around the truck on two large high-resolution displays on the A-pillars and additionally on the screen of the media system, with various view options available. Turn Assist is also integrated. The system also increases the personal safety of drivers during breaks and overnight stays: thanks to the camera-based all-round view, they no longer have to leave the vehicle to get an impression of the surroundings in the event of suspicious noises.

MAN has also added to its video and camera systems, which are available ex works and as retrofits. As an extension of the previously available SCS side camera system, Video Turn Assist (VTA) not only provides an image display in a monitor installed on the co-driver’s A-pillar, but also provides an acoustic warning in the event of danger when turning off. If there are other road users in an area of 2.5 by 6 metres to the right of the vehicle, an acoustic warning signal sounds via the on-board loudspeakers. The camera with GPS sensor and intelligent image processing software differentiates between pedestrians, cyclists and stationary objects such as traffic lights or light poles in order to minimise false alarms.

Meanwhile, safety systems previously confined to long-haul trucks are now offered as options on the MAN TGM distribution range. These include Turn Assist, Lane Change Support and the Lane Change Collision Prevention Assist (LCCPA).
