Nikola Tre BEV makes UK debut

The all-electric Nikola Tre battery electric truck, a joint venture between Iveco and American manufacturer Nikola, was seen for the first time in the UK on the Iveco stand at April’s CV Show.

The Nikola Tre BEV 4×2 features a 738kWh battery pack – consisting of nine modular 82kWh batteries – which powers its FPT Industrial e-Axle, producing 645 HP and 1,800Nm of instant torque.

With decarbonisation such a critical topic for HGV fleets, delivering a highly capable solution that can compete with traditional combustion vehicles was a core objective, says Iveco.

Extensive engineering has resulted in rapid charging capabilities that allow the Tre BEV to go from 10-90 percent battery capacity in just 100 minutes, says the firm; and being able to charge at up to 350kW means that the Nikola spends more time on the road and less time plugged in. A full charge gives this truck a range of up to 330 miles.

Further benefits cited include a spacious driver-centric cab, with engine noise and drivetrain vibrations said to be totally absent, reducing fatigue. A fully digital 12.8-inch driver’s display replaces traditional dials. This configurable screen is designed to help reduce cognitive load. A 17-inch touchscreen infotainment system is also included, featuring large, easy-to-access icons and the ability to display supplementary information. Options include a refrigerator and microwave.

In addition to the environmental benefits of electric trucks, Iveco is keen to highlight the ways in which they can reduce total cost of ownership. EVs feature fewer moving parts than combustion models and very few consumables, the company points out, meaning that serving and maintenance is notably cheaper.
