Enhancing road safety with Microlise DVS tech

Technology provider Microlise has developed a rapid response radar-based solution which can help protect vulnerable road users (VRUs) in the vicinity of vehicle blind spots.

“In the ever-evolving landscape of road safety regulations, it’s imperative for fleet operators to adapt and thrive,” said Fenton Baker, product manager, driver safety at Microlise (pictured, right), who has witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by operators looking to meet the stringent requirements of DVS.

When combined with our existing Microlise blind spot camera system, this solution delivers in-cab visual and audible alerts, providing real-time video on the in-cab display and recording for future reference.”

A major benefit is that by adopting the radar-based system, says Fenton, Microlise customers will be able to retain their existing blind spot cameras, seamlessly integrated with vehicle monitoring and the Driver Performance module.

“Alternatively, for those without prior blind spot cameras, we’re exploring the possibility of an AI-based system to cater to their needs,” he added.

“And our dedicated team is tirelessly working on these solutions, with final details set to be unveiled in early 2024.

“As a market leader in integrated telematics and video solutions, we’ve long been at the forefront of innovations that enhance driver safety. For years, our video systems have been instrumental in linking driving events such as harsh braking to improve driver behaviour and road safety.

“In recent times, we’ve introduced a major AI camera upgrade which allows us to monitor distracted driving behaviours, including phone use, drinking, or eating. When our AI camera detects such activities, it issues in-cab warnings, taking proactive steps to mitigate potential risks.

“If the driver persists in displaying signs of distraction, these events are reported on the customer’s Microlise portal, ensuring accountability, and reinforcing safety protocols. A significant innovation with this product is that it operates seamlessly with multiple other cameras fitted outside the vehicle, while at the same time it is linked to vehicle telematics data.”
