Exploring emissions testing with Totalkare
With Euro 7 standards now being rolled out across Europe, workshops and fleet operators are updating their in-house emissions testing to stay compliant, says equipment provider Totalkare.
“Under Euro 7, we’re seeing tighter limits on the acceptable emissions from commercial vehicles out on the road,” said the firm.
“The latest EU agreements show that tailpipe emission limits for light-duty vehicles largely align with the previous Euro 6 limits.
“But for heavy-duty vehicles, limits are expected to be significantly lower.”
These include significant reduction requirements for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) among other pollutants.
“As well as tighter controls on traditional exhaust emissions, Euro 7 introduces entirely new areas to measure,” said Totalkare.
“For the first time, the EU is placing limits on emissions from brakes and tyres – not just tailpipes.
“The aim is to reduce microplastic pollution from tyre abrasion, along with particulate emissions from brake pads and discs.”
Whatever the final figures become, this broader approach means emissions testing in workshops is already changing, says Totalkare.
“With brake and tyre emissions now in scope, workshops may soon require entirely new types of testing equipment.
“Much of this will depend on how manufacturers respond – and what onboard technology they introduce to monitor or mitigate these emissions.
“At the same time, we can also expect updates to more traditional exhaust testing equipment as Euro 7 requirements become standard practice.”
With so much change underway, says the workshop equipment provider, emissions testing can start to feel like extra red tape.
“But Euro 7 also creates opportunities for workshops and fleet operators – and could even help reduce operating costs.”
With a Euro 7-compliant fleet, says Totalkare, fleets will be able to cut fuel costs through improved engine efficiency, avoid charges and penalties in ultra-low emission zones, and travel and park freely in restricted areas across Europe.
“A new regulatory landscape means new priorities for vehicle-based businesses. If you’re upgrading your testing equipment – or thinking about futureproofing your workshop – we’re here to help.
“We’ve been supplying the latest technology to workshops and fleets for over 40 years, helping businesses adapt to industry changes while keeping their vehicles compliant and road ready.”
