Cutting CO2 with Astra’s CNG-powered Iveco

Astra Vehicle Technologies specialises in truck re-engineering, including the 6×2 CNG Iveco S-Way, which it builds in the UK for Iveco and its dealer network.

The S-Way 6×2 CNG is a mini midlift configuration sitting within a standard 4020mm wheelbase.

“The donor chassis arrives as a 4×2, we transition the vehicle to a 6×2 by fitting a mini midlift axle, install four 100-litre CNG cylinders per side, and configure the vehicle with all required packaging and software,” explained Astra.

“All parts used where possible are sourced from Iveco or one of their Tier 1 suppliers.

“Iveco’s directive was, ‘make this vehicle as close to factory produced as possible, so when in operation the dealer network knows and understands it’.

“We have circa 200 of these vehicles in operation currently, and are now building on the new model with more exciting developments to come.”

Using biomethane can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95 per cent, says Astra, and compared to Euro VI, particulate matters are reduced by 99 per cent and NOx by 60 per cent for cleaner air. The truck is also PEIK certified at just 72dB.

“With the new 500 hp engine and giving up to 500 Kms range, in our opinion this is the only viable alternative fuel 6×2 Tractor unit that is readily available for long haul operation,” said Astra.

The company’s portfolio of products and services includes the Clearview lower door window for direct vision, rear of cab window, nearside of cab bunk window, chassis componentry relocation, dual steer installation, rigid-to-tractor conversion (tag axle), urban artic conversion, and chassis extension/reduction.

“if you need something other than the configuration the manufacturer supplies, we can repackage to suit.”
