The value of fleet branding
Jonathan Thomas, owner of Creative Vehicle Wrapping (CVW), offers his perspective on the role fleet branding and wrapping can play as an effective, low-cost marketing tool, and in protecting vehicle assets and enhancing safety
Fleet branding is about far more than aesthetics. For many operators, vehicles are the most visible representation of their organisation, seen daily by customers, communities and stakeholders. Every journey is an opportunity to reinforce professionalism, reliability and local presence.
Unlike fixed-site advertising, fleet vehicles operate directly within the areas they serve. Whether in waste management, highways maintenance, utilities or logistics, vehicles often work in high-visibility environments and spend extended periods in public view. This makes them uniquely powerful communication assets.
Refuse collection vehicles are a good example. Moving slowly through residential streets, they provide a natural platform for reinforcing recycling messages or community campaigns exactly where those messages matter most. Many councils are now actively using these slow-moving billboards to connect with residents and local businesses about the services they provide.
We have worked with local authorities across the UK on numerous campaigns that raise awareness about issues such as fly tipping and littering, communicate about new recycling initiatives, or promote local areas of outstanding natural beauty. Such has been the success of these campaigns that many councils undertake vehicle naming competitions with residents, which result in hundreds of entries from local people with suggested names for new bin lorries.
Wrapping vs. painting: practical considerations
Let’s talk about wrapping vs. painting. Whilst I am clearly biased in this debate, I acknowledge that traditional paint does still have its place. For example, vinyl requires good paint underneath to ensure a good result. However, that said vinyl is often the more practical option for most commercial vehicle applications and offers significant benefits over painting.
Greater flexibility
Wrapping offers more flexibility. As branding inevitably evolves, contracts change or vehicles move between divisions, wraps can be removed and replaced or partially replaced without damaging the original factory finish. This offers a significant practical advantage for modern fleets operating in ever changing competitive environments.
Today’s vinyl technology allows for detailed graphics, bold colour schemes and large-scale imagery that are difficult to achieve with paint. For organisations looking to communicate wider environmental or ESG commitments, wrapping also provides the flexibility to tell a more complete story.
Protection and residual value
A professionally installed wrap can act as a protective layer, shielding paintwork from UV exposure, light abrasions and general wear. For operators working to defined replacement cycles, protecting the underlying finish may help maintain vehicle condition and support residual values.
Environmental considerations
Sustainability is increasingly influencing fleet decisions. Wrapping is a dry application process and avoids the spray booths and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with repainting.
Also, there are now more environmentally friendly options available. We now offer a PVC-free vinyl option that still delivers superb results and gives our customers an alternative that aligns more closely with their carbon reduction and environmental targets. As organisations place greater emphasis on responsible procurement, we are finding that these material choices are becoming increasingly popular.
Designing for specialist fleets
One of the often-overlooked aspects of fleet branding is how different vehicle types demand different design approaches. A refuse truck presents very different challenges compared with a sweeper, gritter, tractor unit, van or pick-up. Panel shapes, body configurations, access points and high-wear areas all influence how graphics should be applied.
Installation teams need to have an in depth understanding of the nuances of different makes and models of vehicles to achieve the highest standards of vinyl application.
To assist in this process our designers tailor every wrap to the specific vehicle type to achieve better balance, legibility and durability, while ensuring safety markings remain fully compliant.
Branding, safety and compliance
For fleet operators, branding must sit comfortably alongside safety and compliance requirements. Chapter 8 markings, chevrons and reflective elements are not optional, they are essential.
The key is integration. When safety elements are considered from the outset, they can form part of a cohesive design rather than appearing as an afterthought. A well-designed fleet balances high visibility, regulatory compliance and a professional brand image across every vehicle type.
Consistency is important, whether operating one vehicle or hundreds. A unified identity builds recognition and trust, reinforcing operational standards and attention to detail.
For fleet operators, a successful outcome depends on more than just good design. Installation standards, project management, and the ability to work around operational schedules all play a role in minimising downtime and maintaining consistency across the fleet.
The quality of vinyl and expert application is essential and has a major impact on the overall result and longevity of a wrap. We are committed to using only the highest quality of vinyl and our partnership with Spandex means that we have access to expert advice and guidance, as well as the best materials for every job. Our installation team are experts at what they do; have all achieved the highest industry certification and continue to undertake regular training in new techniques.
Alongside bespoke design, in-depth industry knowledge, top quality materials and sophisticated print technology, a clean, dust-free wrapping environment is also key to a successful and long-lasting wrapping result.
We have invested heavily in our facilities, upgrading our 9,000 sq. ft. premises with the latest printers and climate control systems for optimal installation conditions, as well as a slip-resistant, dust-repellent floor.
Ultimately, fleet branding should be viewed as a strategic asset: one that supports visibility, compliance, sustainability and long-term value across the entire vehicle lifecycle. And the choice of fleet branding partner should align with an organisation’s values and operational pressures.
Founded in 2020, CVW is a leader in the installation of wraps to specialist commercial vehicles, including waste recycling collection vehicles for local authorities and commercial fleet operators. CVW has long-standing partnerships with vinyl manufacturers and has been certified as an approved installer for Avery Dennison and Arlon.
