Truck thefts rise steeply

securityThat National Business Crime Intelligence Bureau has warned of an explosion in truck theft since the start of the new year, with 40 vehicles being taken in the week before Transport Operator‘s March edition went to press alone.

While heavy trucks are an attractive target, over half the vehicles taken were lightweight tipper/dropside vehicles, and these are apparently being targeted by criminals who often go on to use them for further illegal activities such as metal theft. This makes it very important for victims of this crime to report their loss to the police as soon as it is discovered.

As well as reporting instances of theft or attempted theft to the local police, operators are also urged to tell the National Business Crime Intelligence Bureau (01905 673333). While vehicles in all parts of the country are vulnerable, the situation is understood to be particularly bad in Essex, London and West Yorkshire.

The RHA has written to all 41 of the newly-elected Police and Crime Commissioners to urge action within their county forces to combat crime against road haulage and distribution. It points out that this is an important but often neglected area of business crime that can affect firms and employment in their areas.
