fuelling2Fuel price campaign group FairFuelUK has said recent comments by the prime minister, regarding the government’s continued intention to keep fuel duty down, mark an “historic victory” for its cause.

According a report in the Daily Telegraph on 23 April, during an appearance for the local election campaign in Derbyshire, David Cameron said: “We have cancelled and delayed almost all of [the planned] fuel duty increases. We even cut fuel duty on one occasion. We will keep going to try and keep those fuel duty increases off.”

While not a cast-iron guarantee, Cameron’s words were understood to lessen the chance of any further duty rises before the next general election, the Telegraph suggested.

FairFuelUK spokesman Quentin Willson said: ”Such a clear statement from the prime minister on the seriousness of fuel duty to the UK economy shows that our campaign has reached inside Number 10. The prospect of no further fuel duty rises until 2015 would be a very solid victory for public protest. It looks like our campaign is working and we will be pressing for confirmation of the government’s position.”
