Truck manufacturers press for more CO2 reductions

europeflagThe heads of Europe’s largest truck manufacturers united at the IAA Show to appeal to all stakeholders in road transport to join forces to tackle the issue of CO2 emissions.

Under the banner of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), members of the organisation’s Commercial Vehicle Board said they were on-target to meet a goal set in 2005 to reduce the fuel consumption of comparable new vehicles by 20 per cent by 2020.

Wolfgang Bernhard, CEO of Daimler Trucks and chairman of ACEA’s CV Board, said that reducing CO2 emissions from transport was not a job for the truck manufacturers alone, and nor should new powered vehicles be the sole focus.

“Trailer designs, alternative fuels, transport operations, and infrastructure also play a decisive role. All relevant stakeholders should be mobilised to work on a fully-integrated approach to CO2.

“If we move from a new vehicle only approach to a fully integrated approach, we could more than double the annual CO2 reduction rate from our industry, going from 1.3 per cent to an average of 3.5 per cent.”

Speaking alongside Mr Bernhard were Harrie Schippers, the president of DAF Trucks; Piere Lahutte, brand president of Iveco; Anders Nielsen, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus; and Martin Lundstedt, CEO and president of Scania.
