simpler_standardThe Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced it has come to an agreement with the Department for Transport regarding the introduction of a simpler testing standard for heavy vehicle headlamps, in order to align domestic procedures more precisely with EU lighting regulations.

The new method has undergone testing by Loughborough University, which evaluated the findings and supported DVSA’s proposals, concluding that there would be no adverse impact on road safety as a result of the changes.

“We now intend to carry out a similar piece of work for when we assess windscreen damage,” said the agency.

“The current standard was set in the 1970s when windscreens were smaller, flatter, less complex and materials were less sophisticated.

“Our overall aim is to reduce test times, simplify the test where possible and improve consistency.”

Transport Operator reported in its November/December issue that headlamp aim was among the top three reasons for annual test failure last year for both trucks and passenger vehicles.
