NoxDown airs AdBlue supply advice

AdBlue distributor NoxDown has advised fleet operators to look for consistent prices and guaranteed supply when selecting a source for the diesel exhaust fluid.

“Tackling vehicle tailpipe emissions is fast becoming a priority for local authorities with many now implementing air quality targets,” said the company.

“The introduction of low emission zones across the UK has forced transport operators up and down the country to reconsider their next vehicle purchase if they wish to avoid charges as high as £300 per day.

“Unlike other sectors, electrification is not currently an option for those running a HGV fleet, while equally the cost of alternative fuels is for many too much to bear.”

AdBlue usage is generally equivalent to around 4-6 per cent of total diesel consumption, says the firm.

Wwhile this may not seem a great deal, the costs can add up. For example, an operator with 40 HGVs could be spending between £30,000 – £40,000 per year on AdBlue, rising as high as £100,000 when purchasing at a retail pump.

“Operators tend not to scrutinise their AdBlue prices in the same way they would diesel. Many end up unnecessarily overpaying and forgoing operation efficiency with their AdBlue, for example only buying AdBlue on fuel cards rather than filling up in their depot via bulk tank or IBC.”

The company continued: “Traditionally, operators have paid a fixed price for AdBlue, however in recent months many have seen price rises. The UK has no indigenous automotive grade urea production, so anyone looking to blend AdBlue must import from overseas.

“Since the start of 2021 wholesale urea prices have risen by 40 per cent – this, coupled with rising freight rates, has forced many suppliers to increase their AdBlue prices.

“In the next 10 years UK AdBlue consumption is expected to rise as more transport operators move to Euro VI and above (Euro VII 2025 proposed) as well as increased consumption in the agricultural sector. While demand for AdBlue continues to rise, operators should be examining their prices whilst also looking for a consistent supply.”

The firm added: “Consequently, sourcing AdBlue direct from manufacturers should give operators the best chance of achieving the most competitive rates. Like any fuel product, it is important to monitor prices, and in an ever-changing market AdBlue supply should no longer be an afterthought.”
