Totalkare: is your fleet air con ready for summer?

The UK may not be famous for scorching summers, but that doesn’t mean air conditioning is a seasonal luxury, says workshop equipment provider Totalkare.

“In reality, fleet AC systems work year-round, warming drivers, and clearing windows, on cold damp mornings and cooling cabins when temperatures rise,” said the company.

“With Britain’s unpredictable climate, one thing is certain: your drivers rely on air conditioning far more than you might realise. That’s why fleet managers cannot afford to take AC performance for granted.”

Extended periods of inactivity can actually harm air conditioning systems, Totalkare warns.

“Seals can dry out, refrigerant can leak, and components can degrade quietly in the background. Then, just when your drivers need cooling most, systems fail, leading to downtime, unhappy drivers, and unexpected repair costs.

“The good news? Maintaining fleet air conditioning has never been easier.

“Totalkare offer state-of-the-art, fully automatic service units and advanced analysis kits from industry leaders Texa and Waeco – meaning we have everything workshops need to keep vehicles comfortable, compliant, and road-ready.”

Modern air conditioning service units, such as the Waeco ASC-Series and Texa Konfort 700 range, remove much of the complexity from AC maintenance, the firm contends.

“These fully automatic, user-friendly machines guide technicians through a streamlined five-step process: recovering refrigerant, separating used oil, vacuum testing for leaks and moisture, reinjecting oil and UV dye, and finally recharging the system with the exact amount of refrigerant required.

“The result is faster servicing, reduced risk of human error, and consistent results across your fleet.

“These units also feature low-emission technology to help minimise environmental impact, along with USB connectivity for exporting service data, adding accessories, and performing free software updates. Comprehensive built-in databases store charging information for almost every vehicle, ensuring accuracy while eliminating ongoing update costs.”

Refrigerant leaks remain one of the most common and costly AC issues, adds Totalkare – but unfortunately, they are also notoriously difficult to detect without the right tools.

“Different situations demand different solutions. Nitrogen leak detectors are ideal for identifying major leaks in empty systems using pressure differentials. For precision work in tight spaces, compact electronic leak detectors provide flexible, handheld accuracy.

“Meanwhile, UV leak detection offers a non-invasive option that preserves existing refrigerant while delivering high visibility through specialist tracer additives, without solvents, corrosion risks, or added moisture.

“Investing in the right detection equipment can dramatically reduce repeat visits and prevent minor issues from becoming major failures.”

During summer, air conditioning systems operate under constant strain, Totalkare adds. Preventative protection is key to extending component life and reducing servicing requirements.

“That starts with using the correct compressor oil.  Waeco’s Profi oil, with their patented, humidity-free, vapour-tight containers, are the ‘gold standard’.

“Compatible with other manufacturers service machines with the appropriate adaptor, Profi oils help protect both vehicles and service equipment by preventing moisture ingress, safeguarding hoses and key AC components.

“Crucially, these specialist oil cans prevent the oil from spoiling (oxidising), so it has a much longer shelf-life, meaning less waste and much lower long term costs.

“Perhaps most critical of all is refrigerant accuracy. Using the wrong gas, or accidentally mixing refrigerants, can damage systems and create dangerous conditions on the road. Miniature identifiers and gas analysis tools allow technicians to verify refrigerant purity before every service, ensuring safety and compliance – whilst universal flush containers remove aggressive contaminants from refrigerant circuits, while recycle guards filter out sealants before they can enter sensitive systems.”

As temperatures rise, driver comfort and vehicle reliability become business-critical.

“With today’s advanced AC servicing tools, fleet managers can move from reactive repairs to proactive maintenance, protecting assets, supporting drivers, and reducing downtime,” said Totalkare.

“If you are preparing your workshop for the warmer months, now is the time to invest in the right equipment. With a new range of high-performance AC solutions available, getting your fleet summer-ready has never been more straightforward.

“Because when summer arrives, your drivers should not be wondering whether their air conditioning will work – they should already know it will.”
