Transafe simulator supports new driver training
Transafe Training, part of Modal Training Centre in Immingham, delivers driver, logistics and health and safety training to individual candidates and local companies. Within its facilities is an LGV simulator designed to help drivers improve their performance, as well as supporting the training of new drivers.
The LGV simulator allows users to train in a fully immersive virtual on-the-road environment, and is build around a full size LGV cab.
Through scenario development, Transafe has total control over the simulated environment, meaning a specific scenario tailored to an individual or specific training need can be repeated until performance becomes satisfactory – for example, changing the loads, the weather, and creating specific road layouts – unlike in the real world, where natural changes to weather, vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and time of day cannot be controlled.
“The LGV simulator has a number of advantages compared to other methods of driver training, such as classroom or on-road training,” said the company.
“Using simulation for training is safe, scenarios can be repeated and this is also cost-effective.
“Simulation training has provided Transafe with a wide range of opportunities. Future developments include adding the LGV simulator into the Driver CPC courses. This will provide candidates with applied blended learning which will improve engagement and learning from CPC training.”
Transafe Training has designed an LGV apprenticeship programme based around blended learning, which takes place both in the classroom and using the simulator. Two regional businesses have teamed up with Transafe to offer this programme to their apprentices.
