Tackling tyre safety with Tyron Runflat

Peter Simson of Tyron Runflat

Tyron Runflat has offered insight for commercial vehicle operators on the importance of tyre safety and wheel maintenance.

“Working across the defence, blue light and commercial vehicle sectors, we see first-hand the potentially catastrophic impact of improper tyre maintenance,” said Peter Simson, Tyron Runflat director.

“For commercial vehicles, we understand the long-haul journeys and tight scheduling demands expected, but with much longer stopping distances and heavier loads, tyre failures can lead to catastrophic outcomes. From tyre wear patterns to suspension and alignment checks, proper fleet maintenance remains a leading requirement for operators.

“As we leave the winter months behind, changes in temperature can also be a leading cause of tyre defects – from a drop in tyre pressure to stiff rubber and reduced grip, there are a number of immediate hazards users must consider.

“Further to this, with deteriorating road conditions and concealed potholes creating heightened risks for commercial vehicles, proper tyre maintenance should remain a top priority. Impact damage from a pothole may not be visible at the time but wheels, in particular aluminium wheels are susceptible to fatigue cracks that worsen over time. This is sometimes confused with slow punctures and may ultimately lead to structural failure of the wheel later.”

Recognising the challenges for commercial vehicle users, Tyron Runflat’s specialist design team created a product which keeps a vehicle moving to a place of safety after a puncture or blowout.

The Tyron Multiband is fitted into the well of the wheel, locking the tyre to the wheel, ensuring it remains between the wheel rim and the road surface.

“It’s important road users do what they can to avoid replacing tyres on a hard shoulder, as this can be incredibly dangerous, so our system allows them to reach a safe location – protecting themselves and other road users,” said Peter.

“Our bands are also tested to 250km/h, ensuring they provide a reliable and durable solution.”
