Training provider 2 Start has emphasised the role individuals within the logistics sector must play in ensuring they are personally up to speed with any necessary professional development applicable to their positions, including training and accreditation processes.

“As an HGV driver or anyone who works within the logistics industry, it is important that you ensure you remain compliant at all times and that your training and qualifications are up to the required standard,” said the company.

It highlights the need for those working within the sector – whether at the wheel of an HGV or as warehouse staff, for example – to ensure adherence to any regulations associated with specific roles and any equipment required to perform them, as well as ensuring that appropriate training has been completed – such as the requirement to complete 35 hours of periodic training to comply with Driver CPC, and the need to record drivers’ hours and observe regulations around breaks, as well as ensuring walkaround checks are completed prior to a journey.

“Other examples… include ensuring that your licence is valid, with a number of different licences expiring after a certain period of time, including forklift licences, Hiab licences, IPAF & PASMA licences and ADR certifications,” said 2 Start.

“If you hold one of these licences and your qualification is about to expire, you will need to complete refresher training.”

The company offers a variety of training programmes for HGV drivers and other logistics employees, as well as for transport managers, to help them fulfil their wider responsibilities for the fleet as a whole – such as overseeing vehicle condition and inspections, safe loading, drivers’ hours and licence entitlements, vehicle tax and MOTs.

“It is not just down to employees to ensure they are remaining compliant; business owners and employers also have a requirement to ensure all staff receive the correct training and hold any required licences to complete their job role,” said 2 Start.

“Additionally, there are also requirements… around working conditions and pay, for example the national minimum wage… Compliance management is vital to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you, and helps to create a positive working environment for everyone.”

2 Start also highlights the role played by the numerous accrediting bodies and certifications that have been set up to improve training standards and quality of work within the sector.

“Some of the accrediting bodies for our courses include ITSSAR for our forklift training, CILT for our transport manager training, IPAF & PASMA along with JAUPT for Driver CPC, and the DVSA for all of our driver training courses,” said the company.
