Components supplier Diesel Technic UK has detailed the key features of its range of spring brake cylinders, which convert the energy of compressed air into mechanical force and motion in pneumatic brakes.

Mark Todd, Diesel Technic UK’s general manager, outlined the workings of the spring brake cylinders, which act as a dual function service brake and parking/emergency brake.

“Primarily installed on the rear axle of trucks, trailers and buses, spring brake cylinders are split into two sections that each performs a different job: a diaphragm brake cylinder and a spring brake chamber,” he said.

During braking, the compressed air presses against a diaphragm in the brake cylinder so that the push rod is moved forward by the piston, causing the diaphragm brake cylinder to act as a service brake.

“When the pressure in the diaphragm brake cylinder is reduced, the diaphragm and the push rod are pushed back by a spring into the initial position.

“Additionally, the spring brake chamber enables spring brake cylinders to serve as parking or auxiliary brakes (handbrake),” Mark continued.

“When pressure drops in the pressure reservoir, the parking brake is mechanically actuated by means of a powerful spring. The parking brake is released by the reapplication of compressed air which pushes the spring back into the driving mode. If a spring brake cylinder is gradually vented using the handbrake valve, it can also fulfil the function of an auxiliary brake.”

DT Spare Parts spring brake cylinders undergo a total of 12 different quality controls to ensure perfect functioning, Mark explains.

“A key feature is the internal venting, which prevents moisture and dirt from entering the spring chamber,” he said.

“The special aluminium housing and zinc-nickel coating provide optimal corrosion protection, while the hardened fork head ensures a long life and safe use. DT Spare Parts‘ spring brake cylinders feature type and connection markings as well as other information, such as the tightening torque for the emergency release screw.”

He additionally offered some hints and tips for working with the components.

“Be aware that this item is under pressure due to the pre-tensioned spring,” said Mark.

“Before removal/installation, the cylinder‘s inner spring must be safely secured by unscrewing the spindle. The item can be removed/installed when in the released state and not under pressure. After installation, screw the spindle back in. During installation, pay attention to the mounting position of the item.

“The vent hole on the front diaphragm brake cylinder must point downwards so that the condensation water can drain out.

“Remove any plastic plugs from the lower vent hole. Replace brake cylinders in axle pairs to achieve optimum braking performance.

“Perform a visual inspection and functional test under all operating conditions after each replacement.”

DT Spare Parts brand offers a complete range with more than 40,000 different spare parts for trucks, trailers and buses, including all standard spring brake cylinders.
