Certas Energy: driving down emissions with AdBlue

Certas Energy, which offers AdBlue among its product range for commercial vehicles, has issued advice for operators on the handling, monitoring and procurement of the fluid.

“AdBlue has hit the headlines recently due to worldwide supply chain challenges and escalating costs caused by shortages of one of its vital ingredients – urea,” said Lee Smythe, AdBlue sales manager at Certas Energy.

Lee highlighted the key role AdBlue plays in ensuring diesel engines meet Euro emissions standards, adding: “Transport operators who fail to comply with regulations face substantial penalties so it’s important to make sure you’re in the know about the requirements for your fleet.

“Alongside the development of alternative technologies, diesel engines are likely to continue to need AdBlue for the foreseeable future, particularly as air quality legislation becomes stricter. Demand for AdBlue will remain high over the coming years so you can expect to continue to need to keep fleets topped up and stores fully stocked – especially during busier periods.”

He continued: “While non-hazardous, AdBlue is corrosive and can dissolve certain materials that are not AdBlue-proof. It is imperative that operators to take necessary precautions to ensure that AdBlue is handled safely and only used in AdBlue-compatible vehicles. It’s also crucial to procure AdBlue from a VDA-licensed partner and check that the product label mentions ISO 22241 compliance.

“Supplies should be stored in cool, dry places, away from direct sunlight, and kept away from other chemicals or substances that could contaminate it.

“Tank monitoring systems are a smart and convenient solution to keep track of AdBlue levels and optimise stock management. The wirelessly-fitted telemetry system enables real-time remote monitoring and automatic top-ups can be triggered when levels are low, helping to avoid unexpected downtime from depleted stores.”

Maintaining a steady supply of AdBlue is important as running out can have significant consequences, says Lee, from hefty fines to preventing engines from starting at all.

“By ensuring AdBlue tanks are regularly filled, operators can prevent costly downtime, performance issues, and potential engine damage,” he said.

It’s essential to acquire AdBlue from a trusted and certified supplier like Certas Energy to ensure the quality and integrity of the product. We offer a range of delivery options, including cans, barrels, IBCs, bulk deliveries, and pumps and accessories at our nationwide HGV refuelling sites.
