ExxonMobil launches CV energy efficiency guide

exxonmobilftaExxonMobil has launched a free Energy Efficiency Guide in association with the Freight Transport Association (FTA), designed to help commercial vehicle operators reduce costs through energy efficiency measures.

The guide, which is available here as a free download, provides on- and off-road energy saving tips, as well as offering guidance on the latest emissions regulations and showcasing the impact that lubricant choice can have on energy efficiency.

In the guide, FTA also outlines the challenges that will be required to meet the European Commission’s target to reduce carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2050 based on 1990 levels.

Best practice guidance is given for traditional on the road measures to reduce fuel consumption such as driver training.

Less frequently considered methods of improving efficiency and reducing costs are also addressed, including the selection of high performance lubricants. For example, ExxonMobil points to a fuel economy test recently conducted on two Volvo FM440 Euro V trucks, the results of which showed that its Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 could increase fuel economy by 1.8 per cent against a mineral 15W-40 engine oil.

Also included in the guide is a case study highlighting the McLaren Technology Group’s efforts to improve energy consumption. Switching to Euro 6 trucks and advanced engine and transmission oils, alongside the introduction of the Mobil Delvac 1 Driver Efficiency Challenge, has reportedly helped to improve fuel economy across the entire fleet by up to six per cent.

The guide also offers advice on reducing energy off the road at the office. For example, it is possible to cut lighting and heating costs by up to 30 per cent respectively by implementing energy saving measures, it says – outlining how improvements can be made by simple activities such as a walk around survey, or more advanced options like smart metres.

James Hookham, deputy chief executive of the FTA, commented: “Energy efficiency has never been so important. The heightened attention on commercial vehicle fleets to play their part in meeting emissions targets is leading the industry to reassess the way it approaches energy management.”

He added: “There are now so many ways to streamline energy usage that we’re keen to help fleet owners understand what the legislation is and highlight what can be done in response.”

Maciej Marcinowski, CVL marketing advisor for Europe, Africa & Middle East at ExxonMobil, added: “We’re offering clear, accessible and practical advice on how fleet owners can make their operations more energy efficient.

“A small change, such as switching to high performance lubricants, can have a big impact when it comes to reducing fuel consumption and costs, ultimately making a business more profitable.”
