Cycle-Safe offers ‘smart detection’ benefits

Vehicle safety specialist Trailer Vision has outlined some of the advantages of its Cycle-Safe detection technology, which can differentiate between static and moving objects.

The company says that technology such as Cycle-Safe offers an advantage over ultrasonic sensors that do not detect whether objects are moving.

“With the advent of the Direct Vision Standard/HGV Safety Permits and the desire for operators to utilise equipment that ‘should not activate in relation to roadside furniture’, many are now questioning whether ultrasonic/’side-scan’ systems should still be employed, especially when new ‘smart’ technology can be as cost-effective and significantly more effective,” said Trailer Vision.

The firm highlights the potential dangers of drivers ignoring alerts or turning off such technology as a result of high false alarm rates.

“Historically, ‘smart’ alternatives to ultrasonic sensors have been prohibitively expensive,” said the company.

“However, this is no longer the case, and optical detection is now both cost-effective and reliable.”

Cycle-Safe only ‘alarms’ if a vulnerable road user becomes a hazard to the driver, says Trailer Vision, significantly reducing driver workload.

“Another benefit of combined detection and vision, is much quicker and neater installation, without the need for multiple holes/sensors down the side of the vehicle,” said the company.

“With the advent of affordable ‘smart’ detection systems like Cycle-Safe, UK roads are set to become safer for all.”
