Haldex offers trailer connection tips

Braking technology provider Haldex has issued advice to operators experiencing connection problems with the ISO 7638 trailer connector for ABS/EBS.

“One of the biggest faults found with ABS/EBS has been caused through misalignment between the ISO 7638 tractor spiral flex cable connector and the trailer socket,” said the company.

“This causes pins to get bent, and also damages the tractor cable connector plug; therefore every time the damaged tractor connector is coupled to further trailer sockets, these may also be damaged.”

Haldex recommends that these connections should always be checked carefully before inserting the plug into the trailer socket.

“Lift the flap of the trailer socket and examine pins for damage; if there are bent pins, try straightening. The tractor plug should slide in smoothly.”

The connector should also be examined for damaged sockets, says Haldex. Damage to the plastic around the pins indicates pin misalignment.

“Depending on the supplier of the socket, ensure that the inner assembly of the ISO 7638 socket is rotated and aligned correctly with the outer socket shell,” the company advised.

“If problems occur, the socket pins should be electrically tested using a voltage multimeter to ensure that it has been rotated and wired correctly.

“All voltages are to be measured using a digital multimeter set on the DC voltage range.”

The company has produced a detailed guide to resolving these issues, with tables and technical diagrams, which can be found at: bit.ly/2krC8K2
