SEFAC’s advice on investing in mobile lifts

Lifting specialist SEFAC has issued guidance for CV workshops looking to make an investment in mobile column lifts.

Among the considerations it highlights is whether to opt for cabled or wireless models.

“The decision… ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages,” said SEFAC.

“Cabled mobile columns require interconnecting cables and three-phase power to operate. While this can be more inconvenient and time-consuming to set up, cabled systems can be more cost-effective and provide a more reliable power source. They also eliminate the need for battery charging or replacement, which can be an ongoing cost for cable-free systems.

“On the other hand, cable-free mobile columns offer the convenience of being able to operate without cables, allowing for greater flexibility in terms of where they can be used. They are also less of a trip hazard and may be easier to move around. However, they do require batteries which need replacement and can run out of power during use if a charging regime is not followed…

“SEFAC offers both options and encourages customers to understand their real need in their environment.”

Another factor to consider is whether to opt for new or second-hand lifts.

“While new equipment comes with a longer warranty and provides greater peace of mind, it is also more expensive for the initial purchase,” said the company.

“Refurbished or second-hand equipment may seem a cost-effective option, but it is important to carefully evaluate the condition of the equipment and the terms of the warranty before making a purchase.

“When considering second-hand equipment, it is important to be aware of the potential risks and limitations. Some resellers may offer refurbished equipment at a seemingly low price, but the warranty will be short and limited and the equipment may be more prone to breakdowns and repairs.

“It is also important to verify the condition of critical components such as control cards and to check the service history of the equipment.

“Ultimately, the decision to purchase new or second-hand mobile column lifts will depend on your specific needs, budget, and risk tolerance. It may be helpful to consult with trusted professionals and do thorough research before making a decision.”

Another key question, says SEFAC, is whether to purchase upfront or via finance.

“A cash purchase… can be advantageous as it reduces the overall cost of the capital goods by avoiding interest charges and other financing fees,” said the firm.

“However, it may also limit the business’s cash flow…

“Borrowing money to pay for the asset over time, typically through a loan or lease… can provide your businesses with greater flexibility and preserve cash flow, allowing you to invest in other areas of the business. However, financing can come with additional costs such as interest charges and fees, which can increase the overall cost of the capital goods.

“Some garage equipment companies offer finance through partners who in turn may offer a rebate system for referring the business. It is worth satisfying yourself that not only have you received a good rate but that you are very clear on the real overall cost of finance and the terms which you are asked to commit to.”
